Referrals

You do not require any type of referral to see us. Referrals are only required if you wish to claim rebates from Medicare.

Many private health insurance policies with extras cover provide a rebate for clinical psychology services where the Medicare rebate is not being claimed. Referrals are not required for claims under private health insurance. Please check the details and requirements with your health fund.

The Medicare rebate is $141.85 per session for psychology therapy with a clinical psychologist under the Better Access to mental health care initiative. In order to be eligible for these Medicare rebates, clients must be referred to their psychologist by a GP, paediatrician, or psychiatrist. If you are eligible for Medicare rebates, we can electronically submit the claim to Medicare for you, so that your rebate is paid automatically into your bank account.

Fees

Our standard consultations are 55 minutes and cost $240.

Please note that all our fees are less than the Australian Psychological Society Schedule of Recommended Fees which recommends $300 for a standard session.

Payments

Fees are due in full on the day of the appointment. Fees can be paid via cash, direct deposit, or credit card. Medicare rebates, where applicable, can be processed electronically through our system on the day of your appointment. The Medicare rebate for a 55 minute session with a clinical psychologist when referred under the Better Access to Mental Health Care Plan is $141.85. This rebate applies to both face to face and telehealth consultations.

Cancellations

Little Lights Psychology has a 24-hour cancellation policy. If you need cancel your appointment, please contact us no later than 24 hours prior to your appointment. This is to ensure that we have sufficient notice to offer this time to other clients also in need of support. If you do not attend, or cancel your appointment with less than 24 hours notice, you will be charged 50% of the fee for this session. Please note that rebates through Medicare or private health insurance are not available for cancelled or unattended appointments.

What should I tell my child about seeing a clinical psychologist?

It is helpful if you can talk to your child about coming to see us before the appointment so they know a little about what to expect. We would encourage you to use words your child can understand to explain the reason for the visit. The information can brief, for example the psychologist’s name and an explanation that psychologists are like doctors who work with kids and families to help them with big feelings and difficult behaviours. Showing your child a photograph of their therapist and the therapy room can also be helpful. Use enthusiasm and positive language, and when referring to any problems, always be clear about behaviours and feelings being difficult, rather than the child themselves.
